TRENDS: Betch

After a few weekends of scouring the internet for inspiration for my first blog post, I found it: betches

As a 20 year old at a college with a demographic of 90% white and 50% Greek-life-affiliated students, I have been surrounded, and drowning in, the betch-culture. For those of you that don't have the misfortune of going to school with "the betches", I'll paint a vivid picture.

The Betch:

  • Blackout drunk 6/7 days of the week

  • Supposedly eternally single but always flaunting random hook ups and walks of shame (excuse me, glory)
  • Constantly talking about food and drunchies but is still high school-skinny

  • Jokes about slacking in school...but is somehow still in school.
The idea was alluring. The bad-ass, sexually liberated, border-line alcoholic lifestyle of these betches attracted something within my stubborn, feminist personality. I admired their apathy towards society's female standards of modesty, prudence, and etiquette. I wanted to go balls-to-the-wall, not care about my reputation, and magically stay skinny all the while.

I tried to be a betch. I joined a sorority. I drank a good chunk of my liver, and my bank account, away. I attempted a diet..once. And I almost mastered the "IDGAF runway flaunt down Greek row at 7am" attitude.

It took me a few months of this plastic-handle-Vodka-induced dream to realize I was bat shit crazy. And not in the betch way...

My confident public displays of drunkenness, weekday hangovers, and walks of "glory" earned me nothing but horrible grades and a shitty self esteem. The "betch movement" wasn't the feminist revolt that I thought it was.

There are far more ways to assert your social-norm-defying feminism and sexual-liberation-against-double-standards than pounding shots as if you had the BMI of a quarterback and using the hormone-raging-zoo that is a frat party as your playground.

So with all respect towards their attempts at female assertion and throwing all social conventions to the wind, I hope the betches are just going through a phase associated with hormonal imbalance or an undeveloped frontal lobe...or anything but true sanity.
